How We're Different: Solidarity, Not Charity
At Food and Solidarity, we are a structured, democratic organisation committed to addressing urgent community needs through collective action. We work together to ensure that no one in our community is left behind.
Traditional Food Banks: Charity model, require referrals, emergency-only support
Food & Solidarity: Membership organisation, no referrals needed, ongoing support + organising for change
By confronting landlords, challenging housing disrepair, and defending tenants, we create real change through collective power, not charity.
What "Participation" Actually Means
There's no pressure to attend every meeting or action. Members participate in different ways:
- Food distribution: Help pack parcels on Saturdays (optional)
- Campaigns: Join housing actions when you can (optional)
- Meetings: Vote on decisions monthly (optional)
You choose your level of involvement. Even just being a member strengthens our collective power.
What We Do
Our focus is on taking direct action that brings immediate relief and long-term change:
- Weekly Food Distribution: Free food parcels every week for those facing food insecurity. No referral required, no questions asked.
- Eviction Defence: We organise collective action to stop unjust evictions and defend tenants' Rights. We've blocked multiple evictions through community mobilization.
- Housing Disrepair Campaigns: From severe mould to unsafe living conditions, we hold landlords accountable. We've successfully pressured landlords to make necessary repairs, restoring dignity to tenants.
- Community Organising: Campaigns around eviction, cost of living, and child poverty.
