March 2026 · Newcastle upon Tyne
Many people searching how to help poverty in Newcastle are looking for practical ways to make a difference. At Food & Solidarity, volunteering means more than donating time, it means being part of a collective response to poverty, housing insecurity and evictions.
From March 2026, we are welcoming new volunteers to support member-led work across Newcastle, particularly in the city’s west end. Volunteers support food distribution, logistics, communications and collective action.
Volunteers help pack and distribute solidarity food parcels. These are not charity hand-outs, they are part of a program where members support each other collectively.
Food & Solidarity volunteers often support members facing evictions by helping coordinate phone trees, turnouts and pressure on landlords and councils. This collective evictions defence is a key part of our work in Newcastle.
Volunteering also includes helping organise meetings, actions and campaigns focused on housing justice, poverty pay and access to public services.
Housing costs are one of the biggest drivers of poverty in Newcastle. Rising private rents mean that even people in work struggle to afford food, heating and transport.
Food & Solidarity supports rent control as a necessary measure to reduce poverty. Without rent controls, food support and crisis responses are constantly undermined by rent increases.
We also support campaigns demanding that metro mayors are given the legal power to introduce rent controls. Local housing crises require local solutions, not distant national policies.
You do not need prior experience. Many volunteers join because they are concerned about food poverty, housing injustice or evictionss in Newcastle.
Volunteers often go on to become members, shaping campaigns and decisions collectively. This is not a one-way volunteering role, it is an entry point into shared political action.
