The Government’s plans on Poverty are criminal- their plans on Crime are poor!
Labour has plenty to say about crime, but when it comes to tackling the biggest crime of all-children growing up in poverty-they are silent.
Chi Onwurah once asked, "Why is this Government making it so hard for our kids?"
Now Labour are in government, she is curiously quiet about the end the Benefit Cap or NRPF, policies directly responsible for child poverty in the North East.
The North East Child Poverty Commission and countless community organizations have made it clear: poverty is a policy choice. Families are struggling under a system that punishes them for being poor, yet Labour is offering only failure.
Instead of addressing these urgent issues, Labour is doubling down on tough-on-crime rhetoric, treating poverty as a problem of individual failure rather than systemic injustice. Their new Crime Bill will criminalise youth even further, while offering nothing to address the conditions that drive poverty and desperation. More policing, more punitive policies, but no real support for families.
Meanwhile, children go to school hungry. Parents work multiple jobs and still can’t afford rent. This is not inevitable, it is a direct result of policy choices.
We refuse to let Labour and our local politicans off the hook. That’s why we’re taking action.
On Saturday, March 22nd, we will rally outside Chi Onwurah’s office and demand a commitment to abolishing the Benefit Cap and NRPF. We are not waiting for permission. We are not waiting for another generation to grow up in poverty.
